it works under direct sun only when there is water under the solar panel. the pump is very small, you can take it out of the panel and put it deeper and with direct sunlight it's very powerful for it's size. if you attach a small hose it will send the water at least 20cm higher. With one of the attachments it can send a small fountain of water about a meter high!! After i left it in the sun all day without running it also runs in afternoon daylight equally good, the duration i did not test
