The main bag has 3 external pocket: 1 on the front and a mesh pocket on both sides. The front pocket only opens at the top and closes with a shock cord. It is perfect for rain gear, snack, and other weather-proof articles. The side mesh pockets are not very tall and designed to hold a water bottle or hold the feet of a tripod or the butt of a weapon. There are 2 compression straps on either side of the bag. There are 2 drawstrings at the top to close the main bag. There are 2 straps at the bottom front of the bag to lash an air mattress, jacket, and the like. Maybe not 'quite' as big as I was expecting and it's worth saying the side zips open straight into the main pouch rather than dedicated side pockets it's unclear from the pictures. but overall only tiny gripes. good product.

It is by far, the toughest bag I've ever owned, including packs which are five times the price! And I have several very expensive packs!
