There are a few issues right off the bat. When it was shipped to me, it was put into a plastic bag. No foam or protection what-so-ever. The box had a lot of crush damage, all 4 points. So bad that the box inside was ripped, which contained the handheld unit. The unit makes an incredibly loud whine when powered up. Changing temperature is slow, and annoying. The handheld heating element is TINY. I was expecting it to be the same size as my soldering iron. It isn't. It is about half the size. This means less heat. Lots of issues. The unit came clogged from the factory - and I'm not talking about the tips being tinned. Inside the rear of the unit, it was clogged full of solder and was incredibly difficult to clear it. Ended up pushing so hard that I drove the hot top into my hand. Fun. The heat delivery is very poor - this may be because it was damaged in shipping. The tips are also very poor quality. Even when tinning, the tip portion which makes contact with the pad, and the inside which makes contact with the pin loses the tin quickly. What ends up happening is you get a layer which prevents head transfer. Now, because the tips are incredibly small compared to the soldering iron, and other desoldering guns, finding quality tips has been thus far impossible. The quality of the gun isn't bad, aside from the miniature heating element and miniature tips.. The trigger has a nice click to it. The lever used to unlock the top is good. It makes good contact with the glass, etc.. and helps with the vacuum. But the miniature tips are a major problem. The poor quality tips - huge problem. The miniature heating element which doesn't heat the entire tube causes frequent blockages - a big problem. Compared to videos of the 985 which can clean a pad to looking like it is fresh off the assembly line - this unit leaves a surface texture because of so little heat. I can't recommend it. Buy the gun, a larger heating element, and build your own if you have a rework station.
