This was the surprise because i hadn't visual contact and the other party was somewhere in streets with buildings, shops, church, traffic roads, wifi devices, etc. Therefore i suppose, that if the other party was at a corresponding point we would have range maybe more than 2 km, so I repeat that are many factors to achieve long range and clear conversation even the weather conditions. Try to play with channels (1-22) if you have patience, into a fixed point both parties in order to achieve clear conversation and repeat those steps in a longer distance if you are outdoorsy and hobby-freak like me.
